A Name and a Blessing for Cosette
Dear Cosette,
Last Sunday was your blessing day. It was such a special day and it gave me the chance to thank God for sending you to our family, I feel so lucky that you are mine. The name we gave you is Cosette Mae Fox. Cosette comes from one of your dads all time favorite stories, Les Misarables. It is a story about second chances and about doing what is right regardless of the consequences. It teaches great lessons. We'll read it together some day and you will love it. Your middle name, Mae, is a name we borrowed from your great great grandmother on your Daddy's side. Her first name was Mahalia but she didn't like that very much so she went by Mae (her middle name) instead. Grandma Mae was a spunky lady. Her husband was a baseball player and he used to chew tobacco. She hated that he chewed tobacco because it was against the Word of Wisdom so one time she put cayenne pepper in his chew! That certainly taught him a lesson. She also was the recipient of miricles. Grandma Mae couldn't have kids of her own so they adopted a little boy but he had health problems and passed away. Later they adopted Joyce (your great grandmother) and soon she was very very sick as well. This was during the Great Depression and they had no money and didn't know what to do to help their sweet baby but she was getting so sick that she was close to death. One night Grandma Mae's mother appeared to her in a dream. She sat on the end of the bed and told Mae that she needed to feed the baby Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk and that it would cure her. Mae followed the instructions and Joyce was able to recover, a miracle and blessing for all of us, without her we wouldn't have you! She loved the Lord and worked in the temple for many many years, and I think she'll be a guardian angel for you throughout your life.
On your Blessing Day you were held in a circle by your dad, grandfathers, and uncles and blessed with so many beautiful promises by the power of Gods Priesthood. You wore a special white dress that your grandma wore when she was blessed, she passed it on to me when I was blessed, and now it is your turn. You were blessed to know that your Heavenly Father loves you and that that knowledge would be a gift for you throughout your life. You were blessed to grow strong and healthy and to always follow in the Savior's footsteps. You were blessed that the scriptures would be a source of comfort and guidance for you as you grow older and especially in times of need. You were blessed that you would look to the examples of women in your life, your grandmothers and I, and to do the things that we have done. You were blessed that you would be an example to your friends and a light in the world today and that you will serve others with a heart full of charity. Lastly you were blessed that you would seek after the greatest blessing of all, your own family and temple marriage and that you will keep this goal foremost in your mind so you can participate in and receive all the blessings your Father in Heaven has in store for you.
You are the most beautiful baby girl I have ever seen and I can't wait to watch you grow and see all the good you will do. I love you tremendously.
