Today's details

Lately I've been wishing I could freeze time with my precious little family, or at least capture some memories in a more real and telling way than just an Instagram. I think about times in my life where I was overwhelmingly blessed and happy. My years at BYU, for example. I wish I could remember exactly what it felt like to be me right then, all the seemingly unimportant pieces that made life what it was. Today was a perfect example of one of those days and I wanted to chronicle the tiny details so I can bottle this moment and drink it in again and again.

Today I woke up to my baby snuggled against my side and my two year old cheerfully yelling "mama" under his door. He slept in until 7:30 and now it's time to play. Today we finally remembered to say his morning prayer for the first time in weeks and it truly does make a difference. Today I stuffed him full of oatmeal and a banana and then bribed him to get into the running stroller with an Oreo. I do believe in dessert after every meal, after all. Today it was another unusually warm December day so our run ended at the park, but he couldn't be bothered with the swings when the house across the street had a life size Mickey Mouse in the front yard. We went to explore that instead. Even better than the Christmas decorations were the two neighborhood cats chasing each other through our unfenced backyards. Winston raced after them giggling and shouting "kitty" until the white one hid a little too well. He had a melt down when he couldn't find him and we had to go home and watch Toy Story to console his broken heart. Today while he watched"woody", Cosette and I watched YouTube tutorials on her Solly Baby wrap, she's ready to graduate from the newborn carry to the classic carry position and I needed some practice. Then while she kicked and played in her new baby gym, I put dinner in the crockpot and addressed Christmas cards, marveling at all the dear friends and family who are meaningful parts of our lives, and I wished they weren't all so far away. Today we took speed showers because we had to be decent for the RC Willey repair man who would arrive at 11:30. He's ordering new cushion inserts for part of our couches and it'll take 4-6 weeks for them to arrive, but it doesn't bother me because he came on time and the couch is still splendidly comfortable. Today I'm wearing my favorite jeans which finally fit again now that Cosette is three months old. Today Winston requested carrots and hummus and blueberries (which he is insisting are called "strawberries") for lunch and I patted myself on the back and called it a Mommy win. We played baseball and jumped on the trampoline in the basement for a while until Cosette and Winston needed emergency diaper changes at the same time, too bad there's only one of me. Today I did four loads of laundry but only folded one, and it wasn't even one of those four. At naptime I cuddled my sweet girl and read the Book of Mormon while she batted her ridiculously long curly lashes at me until they got too heavy to lift any longer. Today I'm only 3 days instead of 5 days behind on my reading schedule and I remember why I love this Christmas tradition and why I love this book. When Winston wakes up he climbs in bed with Cosette and I and we read "If you give a Mouse a Cookie" and breathe in the yummy smells of our chicken noodle soup dinner and the pine tree downstairs. Today Evan came home from work early to play with the kids before he heads off to the BYU vs. Utah basketball game. He gives us all kisses and Winston asks for more. Today I remember to make Cosette do tummy time and it makes her so mad that she rolls over for the first time ever. And then she does it a second time to prove it wasn't just a fluke. We dance to Winston's favorite songs, especially Matt Wertz "Snow Globe" and hold hands as we pray over our meal. Today is my dear Grandmother's 81st birthday so, when dad leaves, we go to the store to pick up a few groceries for us, a few for the Food Bank drive our neighbor is holding, and most importantly some chocolates to take Grandma as a gift. When we arrive, she hugs Winston and he charges downstairs to watch basketball with Grandpa while Grandma and I chat about family history and raising babies. Winston eats three of Grandma's chocolates and insists she plays ten songs on the piano for him before we head home with her borrowed gingerbread men cookie cutters and a new dress she whipped up for Cosette out of some leftover fabric. Today I have seen two spiders in the house and frantically kill the second one in the stairwell on my way up to put Winston to bed, seriously regretting not getting our house sprayed this summer.  Today I've missed a call from my sister in law so we FaceTime with our newborn babies and I wish I was a better nurse with more answers for her little guy who is struggling to gain weight. Today I rock my sweet Cosette to sleep, relieved that I have given up on bottle training, it wasn't worth the tears, hers or mine. Today I'll have hot chocolate and pizelles with Ev before bed and go to sleep perfectly happy to do it all over again tomorrow.

  1. You are the cutest mama and you are rockin it! Also so glad that I'm not the only person who ignores parenting advice and rocks our sweet girls to sleep because they just deserve it sometimes.
